Diary of a Young Farmer

Written by William Robinson 1939 - 1941, then aged about 20.

NOVEMBER 1940

 

Friday 1

Fine until dinnertime then very wet. Strong S W wind.

Covering mangold hob with old hay. Pulling turnips for tops. Cart of tops. Sorting potatoes. Started selling milk again.

Saturday 2

Very wet all day from 10.30 until 5. Terrible strong wind S E - S W.

Among sheep. Let tups go with hogs. Sorting potatoes.

 

Sunday 3

Fine, dull.

 

Monday 4

Fine morning. Light rain afternoon.

Scaling lime. Pulling turnips. Cart of tops. Cleaning lane up.

 

Tuesday 5

Light rain at times. S E wind, strong at times.

Cart of tops. Scaling lime.

 

Wednesday 6

Fine, bright intervals. N wind.

Sowing 3 ton of slag on lots. Cottage field. Scaling lime.

 

Thursday 7

Fine, beautiful day, warm.

Pulling carrots. 14 bags. Cart of tops.

 

Friday 8

Light showers all day.

Pulling carrots. Cart of tops. Pulling few turnips. Left carrots in field. Scaling lime. Cutting hay away from door in back mow in barn.

 

Saturday 9

Wet all day.

Cart of kale. Sorting potatoes. At Mr. W Nelson's funeral.

 

Sunday 10

Heavy showers, bright intervals. Very wet night. Very cols. Strong S W wind.

W Glass going back very much. Getting very low.

 

Monday 11

Fine at first then terrible wet and very cold. E wind. strong. Glass still going back a lot.

Laid 8 heifers in, yearlings. Cart of kale. Jobbing about. Took 3 animals to Kendal.

2 fat bullocks and 1 Dairy Cow.

Thursday 14

Fine, sunny. Frost. Warm. First ice this autumn.

Finished pulling carrots. 12 bags. TOTAL      Bags. Started carting turnips. 5 carts

 

Friday 15

Fine, sunny, frost.

Holmescales Thrashing. Cleaning yard up.

 

Saturday 16

Fine, bright intervals, cold. N - E wind.

Holmescales Thrashing. 2 carts kale. Wagon of lime came. Cart of lime.

Sunday 17

Fine at first. Showers later. Cold.

 

Monday 18

Fine, sunny. N wind.

Ellenwray thrashing. Took tup to Kendal for Mr S Barnett. Cart of sawdust back.

 

Tuesday 19

Fine, cool, frosty.

Greaves thrashing. Cart of lime. Cart of kale.

 

Wednesday 20

Heavy showers. Strong S W wind. Very cold.

Cart of lime and cart of kale. Sorting potatoes. Jobbing about.

 

Thursday 21

Showers, very cold. terrible strong gale S W in morning.

Cart of kale. At Aunty Lizzie's funeral.

 

Friday 22

Fine, sunny, warm.

Carting lime. Carting and pulling turnips. 10 carts. Cart of tops.

 

Saturday 23

Fine at first, terrible wet afternoon. Very strong S W wind all day.

Finished carting lime. Cart of kale. Cart of muck. Sorting potatoes.

 

Sunday 24

Fine, bright intervals. Cold. S W wind.

 

Monday 25

Fine, dull, cold. S W wind.

Carting muck into Meadow, 8 carts. Cart of kale.

 

Tuesday 26

Fine, showers. S W wind strong.

Carting muck, 7 carts. Cart of kale. Scaling lime. Sorting potatoes.

Bright intervals, showers, cold. Strong north wind.

Carting muck into Meadow, 9 carts. Jess to smithy. Finished pulling turnips and carting. 3 carts. 18 carts from 1 lb seed. Cart of tops.

Finished ploughing stubble headriggs. Jobbing about. Cart of kale.
