 Thursday 1

Very cold north east wind

Rabbiting got none. Digging lane out

Little snow shower overnight

 

Friday 2

Very cold north wind

Digging lane out. Got 30 carts out 15 carts thrown over hedge. 4 kits of water

 

Saturday 3

Very cold north wind hard frost

Digging lane out. Got 25 carts out. 25 carts thrown over hedge. 2 carts of water

 

Sunday 4

Cold north wind. Thawing and raining all day

Roads very slippy

 

Monday 5

Very misty all day. Thawing a little

Sorting Aaron Banner potatoes. 1 cart of water

 

Tuesday 6

Dull all day thawing

4 carts of water. Jobbing about.

At Old Hutton Social

Roads still bad in places

 

Wednesday 7

Wet all day

Dosed tup hogs. Sprouting potatoes. Jobbing about

 

Thursday 8

Fine and very warm, sunny at times

Took ploughs and harrows to smithy. Tried to scale muck; couldn't. Digging in lane

Fine and sunny, very cold north wind. Freezing all day out of sun and in wind

Cleaned hen huts out. Jobbing about

Saturday 10

Very hard frost, fine and sunny

2 carts of water. 2 carts of muck into Bleaze Meadow

First work Jess has done since Jan 16

 

Sunday 11

Very hard frost, fine and sunny. Very cold north wind

 

Monday 12

Hard frost, light snow showers. Sunny at times, very cold north wind

Haltered 2 bulls

 

Tuesday 13

Very hard frost, sunny and warm

Rolling oats. 1 cart of water. Sawing wood. Washed bulls. Burned heap of sticks on Strickley Hill

 

Wednesday 14

Frost, light snow shower A.M. Dull all day, odd flakes coming

Kendal Bull Sale, took 2

Strickley Sunbeam sold for 14½ gns

Strickley Telluria King sold for 13 gns

Frost, sunny and warm at times

Carting muck. 1 cart of water

 

Friday 16

Very hard frost

Little sun in morning, very cold. East wind in afternoon

Carting muck. Built wall gap in yard

 

Saturday 17

Very cold north wind in morning. Sunny at times and warm afternoon

Carting muck. 2 sledge loads of sticks. 2 carts of water

 

Sunday 18

Dull and cold in morning. ¼ inch of snow afternoon

 

Monday 19

Snow all morning, ½ inch. Thawing a little in afternoon

Cart of muck. Jobbing about

Tup hog died

 

Tuesday 20

Heavy rain early morning. Thawing slowly all day

Scaling muck. Jobbing about

 

Wednesday 21

Frost, sunny at times. Thawing fast, very warm

Cart of muck into Sammy and Bleaze Meadow

Sorting sticks

 

Thursday 22

Frost, fine and sunny. Very wet night.

Cart of water. Brought plough from smithy. Hedging

2 lambs off Suffolk shearling

 

Friday 23

Fine and sunny, wet night. Big lot of snow gone since yesterday.

Nearly all frost out

Scaling muck. Hedging

Very bad burst in beck at Strickley Bridge and under road

 

Saturday 24

Fine and sunny

Finished ploughing Strickley Hill and started in Crow. Scaling muck.

First day able to plough since long before Christmas

SUMMER TIME STARTS

Wet morning. Fine but dull later. No frost left in ground.

Still drifts of snow about

Fine sunny and warm. Wet at night

Wet morning, showers afternoon

Ploughing. Scaling muck. Wilson brought cart of woods from Canny Brow Foot
